While it might be hard to believe, “Wicked Tuna” Captain Dave Carraro said that he has never tasted what he catches or seafood at all.
Carraro talked about his eating habits during an interview with Hollywood Soapbox.
“I’m 55 years old, shortly to turn 56, and I’ve never eaten a piece of seafood in my entire life,” Carraro said. “I can’t answer that question. I have no idea what it tastes like.
“No seafood, none whatsoever,” Carraro, who has won five seasons of “Wicked Tuna” competitions, said. “Chicken, beef, and vegetables, that’s as far as it goes — and of course my sweets. I have a sweet tooth, but no I’ve been commercial fishing, recreational fishing since I’ve been a little kid and I’ve never eaten a piece.”
That’s a pretty amazing feat for someone like Carraro, who makes his living on catching bluefish tuna off the Massachusetts coast.
“Wicked Tuna” remains one of the most popular shows on the National Geographic Channel. It has been on for 10 seasons and, while there has been no official word, the show probably will return for its 11th season.
‘Wicked Tuna’ Captain TJ Ott Also Spends Time Offering Charter Trips
Do you ever feel like you want to experience what the “Wicked Tuna” fishermen do out there on the water?
Well, Captain TJ Ott offers charter trips when he’s not on the show. You can go out there and, hopefully, pull in a bluefin tuna or some other fish while you’re out with Ott.
“On any given day, 40-50 people will come down to my boat, and they’re staying in the local hotels and eating in the local restaurants,” Ott said in an interview with Discover Gloucester. “Every local business owner will tell you that ‘Wicked Tuna’ has a positive effect. Gloucester was always the bluefin capital of the world, and now people are coming to experience that for themselves.”
Ott mentions Gloucester, Mass., because that’s where all of the “Wicked Tuna” boats are based. The captains will go out on the high seas and do their best to pull in more fish than their counterparts.
While Ott knows those people he takes out want to capture a tuna for the experience, he also said they see whales offshore. Toss in some stripers in the mix, too.
But Ott is not one to hang around right after his busy time of the year. No, he’s going to head down to Key West and grab some sun and relax a bit. Will he go fishing? Don’t be surprised if he does a little bit for some fun and a different type of excitement.
“Wicked Tuna” is definitely one of those shows that Outsiders fall in love with because it involves fishing.
