Will Smith Says One Western Film Is a ‘Thorn in My Side’: ‘Don’t Like To See Myself Wearing Chaps’

Will Smith has made dozens of movies, but there is one, he says, that is by far his worst. And anyone familiar with his decades-long career would probably agree.

Smith responded to fans’ comments and questions for the popular “Actually Me” series from GQ. One fan asked he thinks his best and worst films are.

Wild Wild West is just a thorn in my side,” he responded. “To see myself with chaps. … I don’t like it.”

The 1999 film based on the 1960s TV show of the same name, follows two secret service agents that uncover a plot to kill President Ulysses S. Grant. Smith stars along with Kevin Kline, Sir Kenneth Branagh, and Selma Hayek. It reunited Smith with Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld.

The movie was a box-office flop and a critical disaster. Wild Wild West has a 17 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it has gained some attention as a “so bad it’s good” cult classic in the years since its release.

Wild Wild West was a rare misstep in Smith’s early career, and it followed one of his biggest hits, Men in Black. Smith said that movie ranks as one of his favorites in the GQ video.

“For the best,  I think it is a tie between the first Men in Black and The Pursuit of Happyness,” Smith said. “For different reasons, those are the two almost perfect movies.”

The Pursuit of Happyness netted Smith his second Oscar nomination. His first came from portraying Muhammad Ali in 2002’s Ali.

Will Smith Documents Body Transformation

Like most of us, Will Smith packed on the pounds during quarantine. He said spent his days “grazing” through his pantry and indulging in “midnight muffins.” But, unlike most of us, he decided to do something about it.

The 53-year-old star posted a photo to Instagram in May showing off his paunch. Though, to be honest, it wasn’t that bad.

“This is the body that carried me through an entire pandemic and countless days grazing thru the pantry. I love this body, but I wanna FEEL better. No more midnight muffins…this is it! Imma get in the BEST SHAPE OF MY LIFE!!!!! Teaming up with @YouTube to get my health & wellness back on track. Hope it works!”

The post got millions of likes and thousands of comments. Even former bodybuilder turned Terminator turned Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger weighed in.

“Will, you poor baby, I’m crying for you, even though you’re still in better shape than 90% of America. Keep pumping!” the former Mr. Universe commented on the post.

Since posing in his undies, Will Smith has kept fans updated on his progress with photos of himself working out. It’s unclear how much weight he’s lost, but he’s kept his sense of humor about it all. He’s cracked jokes about his struggles in the gym and his inability to do some of the workouts.
