William Shatner may love the final frontier, but he loves the wide-open plains of the earth just as much—as long as he’s on horseback. Shatner has a passion for horses. In fact, he loves his hooved friends so much that he wrote a book about them.

In a memoir titled  Spirit of the Horse: A Celebration in Fact and Fable, which hits bookstores on May 23rd, the actor combines personal equine tales with stories of the animals’ spiritualism and meaning throughout human history. Shatner co-penned his work with New York Times bestselling author Jeff Rovin.

According to Equine Living, William Shatner began his love affair with horses over 70 years ago. And he knows, “exactly where, when, and why the first blossom of that love appeared.” When William Shatner was a boy, he lived near a stable in Montreal. One day, he managed to get up close with the horses on the farm. And he instantly bonded with the majestic creatures. In the opening chapter of his book, he remembers that riding came naturally to him.

“One day I was able to wangle myself a ride on a rental horse,” he wrote. “And I rode as though I’d been born in the saddle. I was neither afraid nor awkward, and people were commenting, ‘Oh, you ride well.'”

The Star Trek star believes that horses are emotionally and physically therapeutic. And he hopes everyone has the opportunity to work with the gentle giants.

And that passion inspired Shatner to start the Hollywood Charity Horse Show in 1990. To this day, the annual event still takes place. During the late 80s, the star got involved with Ahead With Horses. The charity paired handicapped children with horses and Shatner was amazed by the program. Children who could barely function were able to ride atop a horse with little support.

“You can’t watch these kids without knowing you have to help, somehow,” he said

So he decided he needed to use his platform to raise money for such non-profits. 100% of the proceeds go to children and veteran equine therapy programs.

William Shatner’s First Love is the Stars and Today He Flew Among Them

This morning, William Shatner jumped on a rocket and headed to the stars. And once the 90-year-old actor passed through the stratosphere, he became the oldest person ever to enter space.

Shatner shot into the cosmos aboard Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin ship. During a 10 minute trip, Shatner and a three-person crew went 62 miles above Earth and floated in zero gravity for a few mins before heading back to Earth.

When William Shatner stepped out of the ship, he was a changed man.

“What you have given me is the most profound experience I can imagine,” a tearful Shatner told Bezos. “I’m so filled with emotion about what just happened. It’s extraordinary. I hope I never recover from this.”
