Reboots of popular films and television series just keep coming and coming. And they most likely aren’t going away anytime soon. One of the newest of these to be announced is a reboot of the film “Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.”
That film starred Gene Wilder as the title character. It was released in 1971. The film was an adaptation of the beloved Roald Dahl children’s book, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
Most of you are probably familiar with the story. A poor, young boy named Charlie is given a chance to visit the mysterious factory operated by Willy Wonka. Because he found a golden ticket, he and other children are admitted into the factory. What they discover inside is an eccentric – but wildly talented – owner and world of tasty fun.
According to PopCulture, a new installment in the Willy Wonka story is currently being filmed. This new version is a prequel to the franchise. It is simply titled, “Wonka.”
Also, starring as Willy Wonka in this project is Timothée Chalamet. The 25-year-old American actor is best known for his work in “Call Me By Your Name” and the new film, “Dune.” Chalamet also received an Academy Award nomination for his work in “Call Me By Your Name.”
Chalamet showcased the look of his version of Willy Wonka on social media on Sunday, Oct. 10. He shared a photo of himself in character on set. He added the caption, “WONKA.”
New Willy Wonka Reboot Will Hit Theaters During 2023
The cast of the new film also includes such stars as Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Colman, Rowan Atkinson, and Sally Hawkins.
Also, the director of this prequel story of Willy Wonka is Paul King. He is famous for his work on two popular “Paddington” films. King also wrote the script for the upcoming film alongside Simon Farnaby. Farnaby will also have an acting role in the project.
Unfortunately, Gene Wilder is no longer alive to see this reboot of one of his most famous films and characters. He died in 2016. However, one can’t help but wonder how he would feel about this version. Would he be happy to see the story of the early days of Willy Wonka come to life? Would he believe, like some film fans do, that reboots shouldn’t be made at all?
These are questions viewers will have to answer for themselves. In the case of “Wonka,” they have time to wrestle with those questions and more. See, the film won’t be released in movie theaters until March 17, 2023.
Of course, the “Wonka” prequel isn’t the first time the character of Willy Wonka has been played by someone other than Gene Wilder. In 2005, famous director Tim Burton released another film version of the story. It was titled “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and it starred Johnny Depp as Wonka.
Roald Dahl released his first book in 1964. He followed that with a sequel in 1972. It was titled, “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.”
