Kevin Costner, who stars in “Yellowstone” as John Dutton, shared an interesting photo on Instagram this week.

The photo shows a much younger Costner, complete with tousled hair and leather jacket, gazing pensively into the camera lens.

“Who is this kid??” Costner posted. “#ThrowbackThursday circa 1981.”

In 1981, Costner’s first movie, “Malibu Hot Summer” (also known as “Sizzle Beach U.S.A.”), was released. He played John Logan, a key character, in a movie about swinging singles in Malibu. But he would go on to star in much more serious fare.

Over a career spanning decades, Costner has learned to listen to his gut, he said. And while he’s a multimillionaire now, success didn’t necessarily come easily to him.

“I haven’t always been really successful in certain movies,” Costner told Fox News. “But I still love it.”

Costner did find success with 1990’s “Dances with Wolves,” a film that won him Oscars for best picture and best director. He also received a hand-woven quilt and a sacred eagle feather from the Lakota Sioux, the New York Times reported.

Hollywood executives reportedly hated the movie when Costner and producer Jim Wilson screened it for them, according to Entertainment Weekly. But Costner ignored the naysayers and went with his instincts. And the film ultimately grossed over $117 million. It received 12 Academy Award nominations.

The comments on Costner’s Instagram post were largely positive. “Thought it was Ashton Kutcher!!” one Instagram user posted. “Handsome dude Kevin. Still are.”

Another user posted a bit of a backhanded compliment to Costner’s younger self, suggesting he got better with age. “You are a man like wine,” she wrote. “You are more handsome every year.”

User Laura Palmisano feigned outrage at Costner’s tendency to age gracefully. “Seriously!! How do you not age like the rest of us???!!” she wrote.
