Happy National Macaroni and Cheese Day!

Alright, the food industry trends may be getting out of hand, but we’re living for it. The latest in unexpected food pairings comes from the New York-based ice cream maker Van Leeuwen. The company announced earlier this week that as of 11 am EST today they, along with collaborator Kraft Heinz, will be releasing a limited-edition ice cream flavor: macaroni and cheese. We’ve heard of all kinds of ice cream collaborations with celebrities like Dolly Parton. We’ve even heard of pickle ice cream before. But we have never heard of anything like macaroni and cheese flavored ice cream. However, we’re definitely intrigued.

The companies said they chose to release the limited-edition flavor today in honor of National Macaroni and Cheese Day. The flavor will be available nationwide via Van Leeuwen’s stores and online while supplies last.

What’s the Inspiration Behind the New Macaroni and Cheese Ice Cream Flavor?

So, what can tasters expect from the ice cream? The companies described the ice cream as a “cool, creamy scoop of ice cream that brings that comforting, nostalgic feeling from a warm bowl of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.”

We’re really having a hard time imagining a cool, refreshing bowl of warm, macaroni and cheese. But, again, we’re intrigued!

“We know that there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream,” said Kraft Macaroni & Cheese senior associate brand manager, Emily Violett during an interview. “That is why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese we all grew up with.”

She definitely has a point, both ice cream and mac and cheese are two very iconic comfort foods. But do they pair well together?

“Not only does it taste delicious,” added Violett. “…But it’s also made with high-quality ingredients and contains no artificial flavors, preservatives, or dyes just like our Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.”

Two brothers, Pete and Ben Van Leeuwen, along with friend Laura O’Neill founded Van Leeuwen in 2008. They began as a simple yellow food truck in New York City. Now, they have 23 scoop shops across New York City, California and New Jersey. They’re also planning on opening shops in Pennsylvania and Texas. Additionally, they sell pints of ice cream in grocery stores across the country.

They pride themselves on using only fair trade high-end ingredients, to make their own artisanal flavors. They even offer vegan ice cream for those who are dairy intolerant but who still want to enjoy the frozen comfort food. Previous Van Leeuwen flavors have included Bourbon Cherries Jubilee, Earl Grey Tea, Cookie Dough and Mocha Cookie Crumble. Now, they can also add Kraft macaroni and cheese to that list.
