If you’re anything like the Outsider crew, a few things come to mind when you think of pickup trucks. Names like Ford, Chevy, or Dodge are probably your first thought. Personally, I think old-school square body Chevrolets are at the top of the heap. MotorTrend disagrees, though. Their 2022 Truck of the Year is one that you might have never heard about before– the Rivian R1T. This electric pickup isn’t just the Truck of the Year; it might just be the truck of the future.
The staff at MotorTrend have been waiting for a viable electric pickup truck since 2013. That year, the Tesla Model S won the title of Car of the Year. They knew it would only be a matter of time. Nearly a decade later, their wait is over. The Rivian R1T is an electric pickup that doesn’t sacrifice any of the things that drivers expect from their trucks, according to the publication.
Years ago, pickups were reserved for work. They were a valuable tool for farmers, ranchers, mechanics, and countless others. Now, though, things are a little different. Good pickups can still put in a hard day’s work. However, drivers want more out of their vehicles. They want their trucks to work hard, be luxury vehicles, and haul their families from point A to point B. Additionally, some look at driving a truck as a lifestyle choice. The Rivian R1T checks all of those boxes.
The Rivian R1T: Moving Forward Without Erasing the Past
The thing that makes the R1T stand out from the crowd is that it blends the future and the past. On the one hand, it’s an electric truck with a comfortable interior and a dash panel that looks like it belongs in a spacecraft. On the other hand, it’s a workhorse. The team at MotorTrend rigorously tested the R1T to make sure it could do everything you’d expect from a pickup and more.
Scott Evans, feature editor for MotorTrend was particularly impressed with the Rivian R1T. “For a new company to come in and make their first model a pickup truck and it’s electric, and it’s a completely different way of building vehicles…and to get it this good on the first try is just unheard of.”
MT editor Miguel Cortina summed up his feelings about the Rivian R1T. “It is an impressive truck from every way that you look at it because it is a tremendous effort from a company that is coming to the plate for the first time and is trying to hit a home run. In this case, I think Rivian came to the plate with the bases loaded and it just hit a grand slam.”
The 2022 Rivian R1T will cost a cool $70k. However, the folks at MotorTrend say it’s worth every dime.
