The United States women’s national team lost their semifinal match to Canada at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Forward Megan Rapinoe revealed just how hard the loss was for the team.

“It’s terrible. We just didn’t have it today,” Rapinoe admitted to ESPN after their loss. “Just too many errors from us again. I felt like the space was there for us to play and we just couldn’t get into it, too many touches or, you know, an errant touch.”

The team came into the Olympics with a 3-0 loss to Sweden. That loss ended their 44-game winning streak. The team then competed against Australia for the group stage and managed to get a goalless draw.

“That’s football. They got, I think, one shot on goal, a PK, and from what it sounds like it was a PK. So yeah, it’s a bitter one to swallow. Obviously, we never want to lose to Canada. I don’t think I’ve ever lost to Canada.”

The United States women’s team hasn’t been defeated by Canada since 2001. They were favored to win the match among reports.

“So it’s a bitter one,” Rapinoe added. “Obviously there’s still a lot to compete for. That’s what I told the girls and what we talked about in the huddle. It’s not the color we want, but there’s still a medal on the line. That’s a huge thing and we want to win that game, but yeah, this is … this sucks.”

In 2012 at the London Olympics, Canada lost to the United States in the semifinal after extra time. Some of those players competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It was sort of a comeback for the Canadians.

Team Canada’s captain Christine Sinclair said that “it’s nice to get a little revenge in an Olympic semifinal.”

“I was just sitting there thinking how proud I am of this team,” she continued. “It’s a very unique group. It’s a special group and I’m so proud to be a part of it.”

A Special Conversation at the Olympics

During the game, Rapinoe pulled aside Carli Lloyd. She revealed that they’ve known each other and have been teammates for so long that they know how to empower one another.

“We’re both closer to the end than at the beginning, and we’ve shared a lot of those happy moments on the field and, you know, not many sad moments, but we’ve had a few. We don’t even really need to say anything,” she shared.

With speculation from outlets and fans alike that this could be Lloyd’s last games, Rapinoe somewhat confirmed the notion. She said that “it might not be her last Olympics but it probably is.” Rapinoe knows that Lloyd is one of the greatest players out there and it was hard for her to watch such a devastating loss.

“Obviously we want to send everybody out on the happiest note, and we weren’t able to do that today,” she concluded.

Similarly, Australia lost to Sweden in their semifinal match. The United States women’s national team will compete against Australia on Thursday for the bronze medal.
