Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez have ended their four-year relationship. They announced the split on Thursday after weeks of media speculation that the two megastars had called it quits.

They issued a joint statement to the TODAY show confirming the break-up, saying “we are better as friends.”

We’ve realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another’s children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support.

Rumors of an A-Rod, JLo Split Began Last Month

Reports surfaced in early March that they called off their engagement as they were “working through some things,” People said. TMZ noted that Lopez, 51, had stopped wearing her nearly $2 million engagement ring in her Instagram photos last month, which only fueled speculation of problems. However, the couple continually denied rumors that they had split.

Though no reason was given for the break-up Thursday, there had been rumors of infidelity.

Rodriguez, 45, asked Lopez to marry him in 2019 while on vacation in the Bahamas. They were scheduled to wed last year but postponed their wedding because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We postponed the wedding twice. We’d planned what we really, really wanted to do, [but] I don’t know if we’ll be able to re-create that,” Lopez told Elle. “We canceled it, and since then we haven’t really talked about it. There’s no rush. We want to do it right when we can do it.”

Lopez told Allure in February that the couple had to go through couples counseling at the beginning of the pandemic. “We got to work on ourselves. We did therapy. I think it was really helpful for us in our relationship,” she told the magazine.

Lopez is currently in the Dominican Republic filming the moving Shotgun Wedding. The production has been plagued with problems.
