Actor and former Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has been hospitalized for a heart problem. The actor, best known for his role in The Terminator, revealed he went to the Cleveland Clinic. Surgeons installed a new aortic valve on the actor’s heart.
The former governor of California appears to be awake and alert. He revealed photos from his hospital bed, giving the camera a thumb’s up in response. The actor also posted pictures of himself in a tracksuit. Schwarzenegger thanked the medical team that helped him.
He wrote, “Thanks to the team at the Cleveland Clinic. I have a new aortic valve to go along with my new pulmonary valve from my last surgery. I feel fantastic and have already been walking the streets of Cleveland enjoying your amazing statues. Thank you to every doc and nurse on my team!”
Aortic valve repair and replacement are procedures that treat defects and conditions related to the heart. The aortic valve is one of four valves in the heart that controls blood flow. The aortic valve keeps blood flowing in the correct direction within the heart, according to Mayo Clinic. Additionally, the aortic valve separates the heart’s left ventricle and its main artery.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Had Heart Surgery in 2018
In 2018, Schwarzenegger went to the hospital due to a defect with his heart. According to Live Science, the actor underwent planned heart surgery to replace his pulmonary valve. In 1997, Schwarzenegger also underwent open-heart surgery on the same valve to correct a defect he had since birth.
“That 1997 replacement valve was never meant to be permanent, and has outlived its life expectancy,” spokesman Danel Ketchell said at the time.
Previously, Schwarzenegger has opened up about his heart defect he had since birth. He said he was born with a bicuspid aortic valve, in which the aortic valve has only two flaps, instead of the typical three. The procedure in 1997 and in 2018 attempted to correct this issue.
