Former President Barack Obama released his new book A Promised Land earlier this month, and it has broken two of its publishers’ sales records.
A Promised Land came out on Nov. 17, and upon its release, it secured the highest first-day sales for any book published by Penguin Random House.
On Wednesday, the publisher announced the former president’s book sold more than 887,000 units in all formats and editions. The numbers included sales in America and Canada on the first day of publication.
Additionally, the first week of sales broke another record. The book continued to sell at a record pace totaling 1,710,443 units in all formats and editions in America and Canada. Thus, the publisher also reported the book broke the record for the biggest week-one total ever.
Barack Obama Shares Message About ‘A Promised Land’
The former president shared a message about A Promised Land on his official Instagram account on Sept. 17. He says the book contains an account of his time in office. It includes “key events and people who shaped it” and his take on what he got right and wrong during his presidency.
“There’s no feeling like finishing a book, and I’m proud of this one,” Obama wrote in the post. “I’ve spent the last few years reflecting on my presidency, and in A Promised Land I’ve tried to provide an honest accounting of my presidential campaign and my time in office.”
In addition, Obama said that he offered thoughts on how we can heal the divisions within our nation. He wants to make our democracy work for everyone, which he says “won’t depend on any single president, but on all of us as engaged citizens.”
Finally, the 44th POTUS said A Promised Land is a “fun and informative read” and hopes the book can inspire the younger generation across the world.
“I hope more than anything that the book inspires young people across the country—and around the globe—to take up the baton, lift up their voices, and play their part in remaking the world for the better,” Obama wrote.
Obama’s A Promised Land is the first volume of two that he plans to release. However, there is no release date scheduled for the second book.
