The iconic Big Boy restaurant fast food chain is changing its mascot to a girl.

After eighty-four years, the company decided to change its mascot to Dolly, which could be temporary or long term. The big move is not because of the current climate to change problematic icons.

“We are rolling out a brand-new chicken sandwich. We’re calling it the best cluckin’ chicken sandwich around and Dolly, who has been with Big Boys since the 1950s as far as we can go back with our comic books,” Big Boy Director of Training Frank Alessandrini told local news station WOOD TV. “We decided that she’s going to be the star of this sandwich as Big Boy was the star of his double-decker sandwich.”

Alessandrini explained that the new sandwich and mascot is to give folks something new to try and give them a reason to come. “We wanted to continue to show that we’re still moving forward,” he continued. “We recognize the times that we’re in, hopefully turning the corner in this pandemic and come out of it but we want to set ourselves up for the future as well.”

All About Dolly

The Dolly Chicken Sandwich is made with hand breaded chicken, pickles, and Big Boy tartar sauce on a toasted Brioche bun.

“Dolly, featured in the Adventures of the Big Boy comic book series and Big Boy® kids menus and coloring pages since the 1950’s, has always been Big Boy’s side-kick,” their website reads.

What will the future of the Big Boy company look like? Dolly is here to stay as the mascot for now and the company doesn’t have plans to change the name or back to the Big Boy mascot.

“It is Dolly’s time to shine now with our chicken sandwich. So, she’s taken the forefront right now. She’s in charge,” Alessandrini added. “The name will always be Big Boy but as far as the logo, she’s leading the charge and we’ll see when he comes back if he does.”
