On Friday, legendary NHL player Bobby Orr took out a self-paid advertisement in a local New Hampshire newspaper to share his endorsement of President Donald Trump. And in the last 24 hours, Twitter has gone wild with comments on Orr’s endorsement.
Orr paid for the ad to run in the Manchester Union-Leader on Friday. The half page ad includes a photo of himself and his wife, Peggy, posing together with Trump and all three giving the camera a thumbs up.
In addition, Orr shared his thoughts on Trump and explained why he’s supporting him for the 2020 presidential election. In fact, the former Boston Bruins defenseman highlights that Trump is “the kind of teammate I want.”
Additionally, Orr says that, “President Donald Trump has delivered for all the American people, regardless of race, gender, or station in life.”
Orr is widely known as one of the greatest hockey players of all time. The Canadian-born hockey icon implored undecided voters to cast their ballot for the Republican candidate on Election Day. He asked voters to join him and his wife in supporting Trump for re-election.
“Some of you may still be undecided at this point,” Orr wrote in the ad. “Your vote for President Trump would help to keep America moving forward in the years ahead. So please, join Peggy and me in supporting President Donald J. Trump for re-election in this most important election.”
Orr Sends Twitter Into a Frenzy Over His Political Ad
As news began to spread online about Orr’s ad in the New Hampshire newspaper, Twitter users began to share their own opinions on the matter.
Some fans of Orr were left disappointed by the players’ endorsement of Trump. Many grew up idolizing the hockey player, but still criticized his decision.
Some Twitter users even called out the hypocrisy of allowing some athletes to voice their political opinions, but not others.
Another user agreed with that sentiment. She tweeted: “I love people (getting upset) when the NHL started dipping into BLM and opening up about privilege and people were like ‘just stick to hockey.’ Then Bobby Orr chimes in on voting for Trump and those same people were like ‘well it’s what he believes and we should respect that.'”
In contrast, many other users saluted Orr and agreed with his support of Trump. One even said Orr was one of the few sports celebrities that had the “guts” to vote for Trump.
Finally, numerous Twitter users that are fans of Orr were excited by his Trump endorsement and showed love for the pair.
