If you’ve been following the case of missing Grand Teton hiker Gabby Petito, you know just how bizarre the details surrounding everything are. This is an update.
To quickly re-cap everything, Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie were engaged at some point. There are murmurs that the engagement was actually called off some time ago. The change potentially came right before the two set off for a cross-country road trip to explore various national parks together. While this has not been officially confirmed, the couple’s rocky relationship is documented as of recent. Following an “incident” between them with the authorities, the couple was not seen together again shortly thereafter. Gabby Petito went missing, and Brian Laundrie was reported to take control over her vehicle and leave her, with whereabouts unbeknownst to the rest of the world. What’s more, he never reported her missing. Instead, Gabby’s mother did after receiving a strange text from her daughter’s phone that didn’t appear to actually come from her. The missing persons report got filed on September 11th.
Now, the timeline for everything gets tricky, because so many details have changed. There is one thing that remained constant until yesterday, however. This is the fact that police and the FBI had not heard from either Brian Laundrie or his family. Perhaps the pressure from Petito’s family and mass protesters outside the Laundrie house got to them. Brian’s parents finally reached out to authorities last night. The resulting conversation was shocking. They reportedly revealed that Brian was not, in fact, at their residence as the authorities previously thought.
The Search for Gabby Petito Opens to the Search for Brian Laundrie As Well
The North Port Police Department has been diligently working with the FBI on the case and issued a statement following the shocking news. In the statement, the department reveals that the family shared they have not seen Brian since at least Tuesday. The department also addressed the public’s frustrations saying they are equally frustrated by the latest turn of events. They are urging the public to reach out to the designated hotline with any and all leads for the case.
A North Port police spokesperson Josh Taylor told CNN “We’ve been trying all week to talk to his family, to talk to Brian, and now they’ve called us here on Friday, we’ve gone to the home, and they’re saying now they have not seen their son. So we are working through those details as we speak. It is another twist in this story.”
Petito’s family made a statement afterward making an important distinction. Actually, the statement came from the Law Office of Richard B. Stafford. It says: “All of Gabby’s family want the world to know that Brian is not missing, he is hiding. Gabby is missing.”
The police also recently announced they are not in possession of Gabby Petito’s phone. Still, one of her hiking apps recently changed its location to Puerto Rico. Now, the hiking app in question allows for manual entry of locations anywhere in the world, so it might mean nothing. Only time will tell.
