Fox News anchor Chris Wallace said he was “jealous” he didn’t get to host the final presidential debate. Last night’s (Oct. 22) debate saw Donald Trump and Joe Biden face off for a final time before the Nov. 3rd election.
Kristen Welker acted as moderator for the event, which took place at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. While Biden and Trump expressed moments of friction, the event was less chaotic and more structured comparatively.
“Well, first of all, I’m jealous,” Wallace said. “I would’ve liked to have been able to moderate that debate. And get a real exchange of views instead of hundreds of interruptions. I thought it was a good debate. A good, substantive debate. Two very competing visions for the country.”
Some people criticized Wallace for failing to reign in the candidates during the first debate. The event often devolved into a screaming match between Trump and Biden. In contrast, people online have praised Welker’s performance. She even received a compliment from Trump during the debate. Trump said, “So far, I respect very much the way you’re handling this, I have to say.”

Wallace also took the opportunity to analyze how he thought both candidates did during the debate. He said he thought Biden had more specific plans when it came to tackling discussed issues. But he thought Trump was more confident.
“I thought that Biden had many more specific plans. Whether it came to how to handle COVID. Whether it came to how to handle climate change, whether it came to how to handle health care,” he said. “I thought the president’s presentation — he was more fluid. There were clearly times when Joe Biden seemed to falter a little bit in making his point or finishing his sentence.”
Wallace also believed the questions may have played in Biden’s favor. He said the way the questions were phrased forced the president to go on the defensive.
“It does seem to me that there were questions in which Biden could play offense. And so the president was forced into defense,” Wallace said. “I was really struck by the emails. Because the president obviously was going to bring it up, he did bring it up. I thought Biden was very successful in countering it by immediately throwing the president on defense about his China bank account. And then especially on his failure to turn over his tax returns during his four years. And the president got quite defensive about that.”
Wallace said he thought both candidates did well during the debate, much better than the first. He called it a “good, substantive debate and both sides will have plenty to use from this debate and build on.”
