Colorado Mayor Cancels Pledge of Allegiance, Meeting Attendees Recite It Anyway

A mayor in Silverton, Colorado made an executive decision to cancel the Pledge of Allegiance. But attendees at a local meeting recited it anyway.

According to Fox News, Mayor Shane Fuhrman canceled the Pledge of Allegiance during last week’s trustee meeting. Why did he cancel the recital? Fuhrman cited “direct and indirect threats” as the reasoning. But one trustee challenged Fuhrman’s ruling. In response, meeting attendees chose to recite the Pledge of Allegiance anyways.

Fuhrman continued about his decision to stop the practice, saying people have commented “in and out of public meetings and general divisiveness and issues created in our community.”

But a trustee Molly Barela challenged the decision. She called out the mayor for taking it upon himself to make the decision about the Pledge of Allegiance. In response, Fuhrman urged the trustee to find a law or legal precedent that says he couldn’t make such a ruling in the community.

He said he would “welcome that discussion at our next meeting.” But reportedly, Fuhrman criticized the attendees for not following his decision. Barela, in turn, criticized the mayor for banning the Pledge.

“To tell members of the public they are not allowed to say the Pledge of Allegiance during public comment and threaten to have them removed that it was one strike in you’re out policy violates every single one of their first amendment rights,” Barela told KDVR.

Texas Requires National Anthem At Sporting Events

In recent times, there’s been a political debate about both the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance. Both have their supporters and critics and have become decisive issues. At the end of May, Texas lawmakers came down in favor of the National Anthem at sporting events

According to the bill, the state would require the National Anthem at all professional sporting events. The state’s lawmakers passed the bill in favor of the anthem on May 25.

According to the bill, the state will penalize professional teams for refusing to play the anthem before their sporting events. As part of the law, professional teams would be required to sign a written contract with the government. The contract would legally bind them to play the song at sporting events.

The state passed the bill in response to the Dallas Mavericks choosing to stop playing the National Anthem at their games. As part of the bill, teams would face penalties from the state for failing to comply with the standard. For instance, they would face monetary punishment by losing state and local subsidies. They would also be barred from entering into future contracts in Texas.

The Star-Spangled Banner Protection Act passed both bodies of Congress in Texas. Within the House of Representatives, lawmakers approved the bill by a large margin. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is expected to officially make the bill into law in the near future.
