BJ Thomas, Grammy-Winning ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head’ Singer, Dies at 78

Grammy Award-winning singer BJ Thomas, who gained fame for songs like “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” died on Saturday at 78.

Thomas died at his home in Arlington, Texas from complications of Stage Four lung cancer.

BJ Thomas won five Grammy Awards throughout his career.

Musical influences were many for him. As for country music, they revolved around Ernest Tubb and Hank Williams. Jackie Wilson and Little Richard provided the R&B/soul influence. Thomas starting singing in church as a kid and joined the Houston, Texas-based Triumphs when he was a teenager.

He was born in Hugo, Okla., on Aug. 7, 1942, then moved to Houston with his family. It was in Houston where BJ Thomas recorded his first Top 10 song, a cover version of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” It became his first million-selling single and wouldn’t be his last.

His next big hit song was “Hooked on a Feeling” from 1968. Then he ended up meeting songwriter-producer Burt Bacharach through mutual Scepter Records recording artist Dionne Warwick. In addition, that led to Thomas recording “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” which appeared in the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”

That earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song. He recorded that song and sold more than 2 million copies. It remains the song most people identify him with to this day.

Other BJ Thomas-related songs include “Everybody’s Out of Town,” “I Just Can’t Help Believing,” “No Love at All” and “Rock and Roll Lullaby.”

Also, he is a Grammy Hall of Fame inductee.

BJ Thomas delved into the country, pop, and gospel musical genres. He earned Country Music Association, Dove, and Grammy awards and nominations through his career dating back to the 1960s.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years Gloria, their three daughters Paige Thomas, Nora Cloud, and Erin Moore, and four grandchildren, Nadia Cloud, Keira Cloud, Ruby Moore, and Billy Joe Moore.

Obviously, fans will be listening to the music of BJ Thomas for years to come. His songs will resonate in his fans’ hearts as they share them with family and friends, too.
