Some “incredible” news left Billy Ray Cyrus “speechless” on Saturday, Jan. 9.
Via Twitter, the country music star announced that “Old Town Road,” his hit song with rapper Lil Nas X, has gone platinum 14 times over.
“Incredible. I’m speechless. #OTR is now 14x platinum and the most certified song in music history. Thank YOU! @LilNasX@YoungKio@Dopebyaccident@theRonPerry@ColumbiaRecords@bolooki,” Cyrus posted along with a clip of the music video. The clip also highlights the song’s status as RIAA Platinum 14 times and as the “highest certified song in music history.”
Lil Nas X also took to Twitter to share the milestone.
“Old Town Road is officially 14 times platinum! Most platinums for any song ever! Let’s gooo!” he posted.
Billy Ray Cyrus Explains ‘Old Town Road’ Success
During an appearance on the Kelly Clarkson Show in November, Billy Ray Cyrus said the popularity of “Old Town Road” is to thank in part to people looking back to 2019 and to a pre-COVID-19 world.
“We’re all starting brand new again,” Cyrus told Clarkson in the remote interview. “And you’re right. We all love ‘Old Town Road.’ When we hear it, we go back to 2019. I know I do. I loved 2019. I’m looking forward to 2021.”
The collaboration between Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus was the result of a tweet the rapper sent out during December 2018. In the tweet, he expressed interest in having Cyrus remix “Old Town Road” with him. Lil Nas X reportedly knew who Cyrus is from watching Miley Cyrus’s “Hannah Montana” television show.
Cyrus previously told Kelly Clarkson that Columbia reached out to him about the collaboration. While unfamiliar with Lil Nas X, Cyrus listened to what the record label had sent. After hearing the song, he knew immediately that he wanted to collaborate with Lil Nas X. The remix was released in April 2019.
“This song was something the whole world could sing,” Cyrus said. “The whole world could dance.”
“Old Town Road” won two Grammy Awards in 2020 – one for best pop duo/group performance and one for best music video.

‘Mama Said Knock You Out’ Cover on Latest EP
Fans of “Old Town Road” and Billy Ray Cyrus should check out his EP, “The Singer Hill’s Sessions – Mojave.” Released in November, it has five tracks including a cover of LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out.”
Instead of rapping the song as LL Cool J did back in 1992, Cyrus puts his own country music spin on the track. He’s accompanied by banjos. Will it reach the success of “Old Town Road” for the singer? Who knows, but he sees the cover as a logical progression.
“I’ve always loved that song — as well as fellow Kentucky native, Muhammad Ali — and just the concept of persistence and believing in yourself,” Cyrus said in a statement. “Countrifying it was a joy and I feel like this song is the next segment of my circle following ‘Old Town Road.’”
