In a new video ahead of the ACM Awards, Blake Shelton sits down and talks about his previous awards and what it’s like collaborating with his fiancée, Gwen Stefani. Shelton was nominated for an award with Stefani.
He talks about how his first win with Trace Atkins doesn’t mean nearly as much as being nominated with Gwen Stefani, “Hopefully Trace won’t hear this, but winning that award with him doesn’t mean nearly as much to me as just being nominated for that award with Gwen. Gwen- she’s everything to me,” Shelton admitted.
Shelton’s gratitude for the situation is evident. “To be able to make records with her and have a couple of hit songs with her out on country radio, and have that recognition with the ACMs, that somehow takes it to another level, not for me but for Gwen. It’s not something I think she ever thought was possible for her.” It’s fair to say. Gwen Stefani going country definitely wasn’t a predictable path for her.
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s Unlikely Relationship
In the video, Shelton puts things plainly. “It’s strange enough that she and I are together to begin with; let’s be honest. Now the fact that we’re making records together and now we’re nominated for an ACM award… It’s just unbelievable and I’m so happy about it.” On the surface, they may seem like an odd couple. They’re two people from very different musical backgrounds after all.
Shelton and Stefani met on the set of The Voice in 2014. Gwen Stefani even admitted to Ellen that she didn’t even know who Blake was. “Before I was on The Voice I never heard of him before. I’m an O.C. girl. Like, what would I know?” In 2015, after some less than subtle flirting on The Voice, the couple announced that they were dating.
Since then, the couple has made multiple songs together. In May 2016, they released their first song together, Go Ahead and Break My Heart. They also released a Christmas duet in 2017, You Make it Feel Like Christmas.
In January of 2020, Shelton and Stefani released Nobody But You, which was a hit. It made it to #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Digital Songs chart. Shelton has said that the heartfelt Nobody But You is an accurate tribute to his relationship with Stefani.
On working with Stefani, Blake Shelton said in an Instagram clip that “I’m still learning when it comes to recording with Gwen. We’ve only recorded literally a handful of songs together. But the thing that I think that I’m blown away with Gwen is just how hard she works when she gets into the studio. She’s not willing to take anything less than greatness… and she’s willing to put in the work. I don’t think Gwen knows how great of a vocalist she really is.”
For fans of the unexpected yet fitting couple, there’s a lot coming up. With an upcoming wedding, the ACM awards, and likely future collaborations, Shelton and Stefani have a wonderful and busy year in store for them.
