Brad Paisley Credits Andy Griffith for How He Raises His Son: ’You Can Raise a Boy With The Lessons From ‘The Andy Griffith Show’

“The Andy Griffith Show” is a perfect example of a television show that has been passed down from one generation to the next. There are many lessons to be learned from the relationship between Andy Taylor and his son, Opie. Country music star Brad Paisley has used lessons from the show while he’s raising his own son.

It’s not surprising that Paisley would find wisdom from Griffith’s classic show. The singer had a lot of respect for the television star. The pair co-starred in the music video for Paisley’s song “Waitin’ on a Woman” during 2008, according to a 2012 article by the Los Angeles Times.

Years before Brad Paisley worked with Andy Griffith on the video, he spent many hours watching the actor portray Sheriff Andy Taylor on “The Andy Griffith Show.” It was while watching the classic show as a child in West Virginia that Paisley learned many important life lessons.

Paisley certainly isn’t the only fan of the show who gained wisdom from what went on in Mayberry. In addition to applying those lessons to his own life, the singer has also passed them on to his own son. Those lessons have been helpful tools to him as a parent. That’s what he told Griffith when they worked together so many years ago.

“I told (Andy Griffith), ‘You are as responsible for how I’m raising my son as either one of my parents,'” Paisley said in the article. “Just from watching that show, you can raise a boy with the lessons from ‘The Andy Griffith Show.'”

Brad Paisley Worked with Andy Griffith on ‘Waitin’ on a Woman’ Music Video

According to the Los Angeles Times, Brad Paisley released his “Waitin’ on a Woman” song in 2005. It appeared on his “Time Well Wasted” album. It would be a few more years before the music video was shot.

Interestingly, it was actor Billy Bob Thornton who helped inspire Andy Griffith’s involvement in the music video for the song. Paisley said that his friend Peter Tilden talked to Thornton about the song and its video. Thornton then suggested Griffith as the perfect person to cast. In order to get Griffith on board, Brad Paisley had to write him a letter.

“I wrote the letter and said, ‘This song epitomizes your character as well as the values and things you celebrate, and I wonder if you wanted to be in a music video.’ His wife, Cindy, was instrumental in this. It’s typical: When a woman likes something, we listen, and that’s the point of the song in some ways,” Paisley said, according to the newspaper.

Luckily, Griffith said yes to being in the video. Before it was filmed, Paisley traveled with his wife and son, Huckleberry, to visit Griffith in North Carolina.

“We just hung out and had the best afternoon,” Paisley told the newspaper. “I have pictures of him holding Huck in his arms.”

The video shoot, he said, is one he’ll treasure for the rest of his life.
