The Elf on the Shelf strikes again! This time, Carrie Underwood joined the viral trend with a miniature picture of Mariah Carey sitting on her shoulder. Boom. Carey on a Carrie. And so the Christmas trend keeps on rolling.
“Love this trend,” Carrie Underwood exclaimed with the hashtag #CareyOnCarrie.
In the weeks leading up to Christmas, this perversion of a Christmas tradition has blown up the internet. Everywhere you look, you will see something on something else. The clever puns have quickly become the biggest meme sensation on Instagram, Twitter, and all other social media platforms.
Now, it’s difficult to really find where the trend started; it’s everywhere. We have seen Wentz on the Bench, we have seen Carey on a Carrie, who knows where it came from– or where it will go.
Where Carrie Underwood got the Idea
Tracing back Carrie Underwood’s joke first takes us to Mariah Carey. On Instagram, she posted a picture of Jim Carrey’s “Grinch” perched on her shoulder with the hashtag #CarreyOnCarey. From there we take it to Kerry Washington with her Perry on Kerry featuring Katie Perry on her shoulder. She took her inspiration from Elizabeth Banks, Hanks on Banks with Tom Hanks, who in turn copied Reese Witherspoon’s “Grease” on Reese.
The final clue we get is from Garcelle on Pharell, but from there, the trail runs cold. The jokes are definitely out there, but that is the extent of the lineage for this iteration. It must have started with Eld on a Shelf, but no one knows how far the internet will take this trend. We just hope they are all as funny as these.
