A few years ago, country superstar Carrie Underwood revealed her love for sports growing up and talked about their importance to her life.
Underwood spoke with the Hartford Courant while on tour in 2016. She talked with one of the publication’s reporters by phone as she took part in a Q&A session. The singer had just new released her newest version of the Sunday Night Football theme song. So the pair appropriately talked about her connections to the NFL, and also touched on the sports she played while growing up in Oklahoma.
Not only did Underwood grow up playing various sports, but she’s also a big advocate for them. Her husband, Mike Fisher, is a former NHL player, and she’s involved with the NFL because of her theme song. But Carrie Underwood has supported girls’ sports for years by promoting them and the importance of kids staying active. In addition, she donated $500,000 to the Sports Matter initiative, which focuses on helping girls’ youth sports teams across the nation. Underwood opened up about her own favorite sports and the value behind them.
“I grew up playing softball and basketball and was a cheerleader briefly,” Carrie Underwood told the Hartford Courant. “But softball was the longest-running sport in my youth. We played from T-ball onward, and I grew up loving the whole team aspect. There’s so many life lessons that can be learned through sports.”
The country star went on to explain that she played one of the tougher positions in softball. Underwood played catcher during her lengthy softball career. As the conversation turned to football and her NFL ties, the interviewer asked about her NFL allegiances since Oklahoma doesn’t have a professional team.
“We basically got two teams (on TV). We didn’t have cable or satellite, so on local channels we’d get one of two games, either Kansas City or Dallas, because they were closest to us. I definitely grew up a Dallas [Cowboys] fan,” she revealed.
Carrie Underwood Shares Heartfelt Anniversary Photo with Husband Mike Fisher
Recently, Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher celebrated their 11th anniversary together since tying the knot in 2010. The couple got married on July 10th that year, and have built a life and a family together since welcoming two sons into their life.
The pair took a simple selfie together seemingly at dinner together. The no-frills candid picture of the famous couple captured Underwood and Fisher both smiling ear to ear. The singer wished her husband a happy anniversary and is looking forward to “many, many more.”
“Happy anniversary, babe!” Carrie Underwood wrote on her Instagram post. “11 years sure have flown by…here’s to many, many more! Love you!”
The Nashville-based couple didn’t always have it so easy though. Fisher, a Canadian hockey star, used to live up north while Underwood still lived in Tennessee. When they first met, Underwood was unsure about things because of the distance between Canada and Tennessee. Yet she agreed to go on a date with Fisher on New Year’s Day in 2008. They’ve been inseparable ever since.
