Fans get their first glimpse into Carrie Underwood’s new gospel album My Savior with this new single.
Underwood just shared the first single from her new album, “Softly And Tenderly.” The song is a Christian hymn that dates back to 1880. It’s been covered by artists including Reba McEntire, Daniel Johnston, and Amy Grant. Now, Underwood released her own moving rendition of the song. During the song, Underwood sings, “Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, calling for you and for me. See, on the portals, He’s waiting and watching. Watching for you and for me. Come home, come home, ye who are weary come home. Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, calling, “O sinner, come home.”
On a post promoting the album, Carrie said that she was very specific about the songs she chose for the album.
“For this album, I chose some of the familiar hymns I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember,” Carrie said. “These songs set the foundation for me and I hope you love them as much as I do.”
This Could Be Carrie Underwood’s Most Important Album
Since her debut album in 2005, Carrie has carved her own path in the country music world. She’s released seven studio albums and 29 singles. Additionally, Carrie has won seven Grammys, seven CMAs, and 15 AMAs. Certainly, she already has a legacy when it comes to the music she’s created. However, Carrie said that My Savior is the true legacy she’s been wanting to create.
“This album is one that I have always wanted to make,” Carrie said during a promo video for the album. “This is legacy stuff to me. I feel like at the heart of it all is an album like this one.”
During the same video, Carrie said that singing at church was some of the first time’s she felt her passion for performance.
“We had our little church … My first one probably would have been just very tiny – wooden pews,” she said. “It was probably the first place where I sang, as well, was in church. Singing these hymns in the congregation as well as being on stage and singing in front of people. It was always just familiar. These songs are like a warm hug…”
All of us could use a warm hug these days. Fans can pre-order the album now before its official release on March 26. But if that’s not enough Carrie Underwood, you can add “Softly Tenderly” to your playlist in the meantime.
