Country megastar Carrie Underwood and her husband, Mike Fisher, opened up about faith and family during the third episode of “I Am Second’s God & Country” series. For this episode, the couple held nothing back when talking about their two sons, Jacob and Isaiah. Alongside the interview, viewers got a chance to see adorable candid home videos and family photos as they discuss their journey of becoming parents.
During the heartwarming interview, the couple brought up specific moments in their day-to-day life that keep them interconnected—Underwood brought up her love for morning cuddles, family dinners, and family prayers. As grounded as the family seems, Underwood still says she feels like parenting is “mindboggling” for her.
“Just to look at both of our boys and fall more and more in love every day, I still say to Mike all the time, ‘we have two kids!’ It’s a little mind-boggling,” Underwood admitted.
“Being a dad is hard to explain, everybody is trying to give you advice and tell you what to expect … but it’s the greatest thing ever,” says Fisher, the former professional hockey player. “For me it’s trying to be that dad that my dad was to me, and to be the husband that he was to my mom.”
The series’ first two episodes of the four-part series focused on the early days of their marriage. In addition, the episodes also delved into the heartbreaking details of the couple’s struggle through multiple miscarriages in 2018.
Carrie Underwood & Mike Fisher’s Faith & Marriage Tested Following Multiple Miscarriages
For Underwood and Fisher, the couple relied heavily upon their spirituality to get them through their adversity. “I just had an honest conversation with God. I was hurt, and I told him how I felt,” Underwood confessed with tears in her eyes. After the couple welcomed their now-5-year-old son, Isaiah, they tried to have a second child. Even though Underwood got pregnant quickly, she tragically found out she had a miscarriage.
Devastation struck the family again when, after she got pregnant for the third time, they had a second miscarriage. “It sounds wrong when you say it, but, it’s one of those ‘bad things that happen to other people,’ you know what I mean?” Underwood said. “It’s not something that you ever envision yourself having to deal with.”
Following the loss, Underwood revealed that her husband later had a premonition and told her that they would have another boy named Jacob. “I was just wrestling and probably the most honest I’d been with God, an emotional Fisher said. “And I heard, not audibly, but I sensed that God told me that we were going to have a son, and his name’s Jacob.”
Again, the couple would attempt to get pregnant. After succeeding for the fourth time, tragedy returned, and the couple experienced their third miscarriage. “I had an honest conversation with God, and I told him how I felt, I was hurt. I was a little angry and, of course, you feel guilty for being mad at your creator,” Carrie Underwood confessed. “And I told him we needed something. We needed to have a baby or not, ever, because I couldn’t keep going down that road anymore.”
Finally, the pain would be somewhat remedied when the couple welcomed their second boy on Jan. 21, 2019, whom they named Jacob. Despite the grief, the couple confessed that the loss strengthened their bond in their marriage.
