Country star Carrie Underwood appeared on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” to talk about the holidays and singing. So naturally, the topic of her performance on Sunday Night Football came up. Underwood sings the pre-game theme song, “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night.”
“It’s been so much fun being able to do the [Sunday Night Football] open,” Underwood said. “And we do watch football as much as we can… We don’t always get to watch what we want, but we watch as much football as we can.”
Carrie Underwood Watches SNF With Sons
But the whole Sunday Night Football thing is a little confusing to Underwood’s two young sons. As Underwood explained, she sat down to watch football with them one Sunday night. And her kids were puzzled to see her appear onscreen along with the football players.
“Actually, not too long ago, we were all sitting on the couch, and the open came on,” Underwood said. “And my 5-year-old was like, ‘That’s you.’ Like, ‘Are you in this show?’ And I was like, ‘No, I’m not in the show. I just introduce, you know, the game.’ And it was hard for him to grasp why I was singing about football.”
A Socially Distanced Open
This is the eighth consecutive season headlining “Sunday Night Football” for Carrie Underwood. According to the Oklahoman, the 2020 show also includes cameos from National Football League stars like Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.
“More than anything, everybody’s just grateful that we get to do this,” Underwood said in a behind-the-scenes video posted by NBC. “Fans are gonna get to be a part of the open. With our world today and trying to do things in a socially distanced manner, that lended itself to giving us a new perspective on the open.”
Underwood said she feels people need the smidgen of normalcy that Sunday Night Football provides, even – and perhaps especially – during the pandemic.
