Country music singer and songwriter Chris Janson is “grateful to be alive” after he and his wife awoke to a house fire one night in April.

The “Good Vibes” and “Buy Me a Boat” singer says that if it weren’t for his wife, Kelly, waking up, things could have turned out much differently than they did.

“Thank God, God woke up my wife Kelly,” Janson told People Magazine in a recent interview. “If it weren’t for her hearing that faint ‘beep, beep’ of the fire detector, it could have been very bad.”

The Grand Ole Opry member told People that a fire was burning directly underneath the couple’s bedroom. Janson’s home is located just south of Nashville, Tennessee.

“This was not a little fire,” he explains. “This was a legit, ‘7-foot flame, taller than me’ fire. It was a ‘melting my ceiling fan onto my ottoman’ fire.”

Thankfully, the country star had enough time to contact the authorities and get the fire department involved. Prior to that, he was able to safely evacuate Kelly and their children, Georgia and Jesse. But then, Janson decided he couldn’t wait any longer while he watched smoke fill his home. He was doing his best to extinguish the flames with buckets of water until more help arrived.

“I went into survival mode,” Janson admits. “The fire melted my ottoman and literally created a campfire essentially right in the middle of my studio room. Thankfully, it didn’t burn the house.”

Chris Janson Is ‘Grateful to Be Alive’

Chris Janson thanks God for intervening that night. The country music star says that the whole ordeal was obviously tragic. However, there was one important item that wasn’t entirely burned.

“It was our Jesus Calling devotional book,” Janson notes. “It’s not quite a Bible, but we have read from it since we were dating. The one that had been sitting on the ottoman was a spare copy since we keep the original copy by our bed. But it was one of the only things on the ottoman not completely burned up. I’ve said it multiple times, but God has our back. There is no other reason that Kelly would have woken up that night to that faint ‘beep beep.'”

Kelly Janson took to Instagram to share a picture of the charred remains from the couple’s special book.

Meanwhile, Chris Janson says that at this point, he is just grateful that he and his family are alive. He also encourages his fans to make sure and check that their smoke alarms are in working order.

“I’m just grateful to be alive. I’m grateful that the house didn’t burn down,” Janson admits. “I encourage people to check smoke alarms. It’s something we don’t think about but in ours, all of the detectors were supposed to be hardwired in and they are, but for some reason, they all didn’t go off at one time. Only the one in that one room was going off.”
