CMT Awards 2021: Carrie Underwood Looking to Extend Winning Record

Get ready, it’s that time of year again! The 2021 CMT Music Awards show begin tonight (June 9) at 7 p.m. CDT. Finally, country music fans get to find out which talented artists earn a trophy.

Singer and songwriter Carrie Underwood could very well take home her ninth “Video of the Year” award. She currently holds the record for most wins in history. Last year, she won it for “Drinking Alone.”

CMT announced, the final six nominees for “Video of the Year” are Carrie Underwood and John Legend (“Hallelujah”), Elle King and Miranda Lambert (“Drunk And I Don’t Wanna Go Home”), Kane Brown (“Worldwide Beautiful”), Keith Urban and Pink (“One Too Many”), Kelsea Ballerini (“Hole in the Bottle”), and Kenny Chesney (“Knowing You”).

Nobody else even comes close to taking Underwood’s title for most wins. She can rest assure, it’s going to be awhile. The next person with multiple video awards is Urban with 3, then Chesney has one.

Other nominees such as Brown, Ballerini, and Lambert would be receiving the first “Video of the Year,” according to Gold Derby. Also the collaborative artists, not specifically known for country music, Legend, King, and Pink could be winners as well.

Will Carrie Underwood extend her record at the annual music event tonight?

The CMT award record holder is nominated again this year for her video “Hallelujah.” It features a moving duet with her and John Legend.

Unfortunately, fans have to wait to see whether or not Underwood takes another win.

Looking Back at CMT Music Awards’ Past Winners

While we await the festivities to begin tonight, let’s take a look back at previous CMT Awards. Featuring artists who’ve won in the past, such as Kenny Chesney in 2002. He earned “Video of the Year” for his song “Young.”

In 2003 and 2004, Toby Keith received an award both years for honoring U.S. servicemen. He dedicated his wins for “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” as well as “American Soldier” to military personnel.

Country music star Keith Urban, in 2005 and 2006, earned back-to-back “Video of the Year” wins for “Days Go By” and “Better Life,” read in Gold Derby. Then again in 2017 for “Blue Ain’t Your Color.”

Carrie Underwood’s first “Video of the Year” award was in 2007 for the song “Before He Cheats.”

“It was at the CMT Awards last year that I gave my very first acceptance speech ever [“Jesus, Take The Wheel” earned Female Video and Breakthrough Video wins], so let me tell you it’s great to be back up here again,” she said at the award show. “Thank you fans. I’ve had such an amazing blessed two years. I started out on a fan-based show and you guys have continued to support me throughout everything.
