Colt Ford spoke out about his eye cancer for the first time.
On May 27, the country crooner spoke with People about his diagnosis and eye surgery. In March, his friend mentioned that he had a spot on his eye. The spot grew over the span of two weeks and he ended up visiting a specialist in Georgia.
“I remember them saying, ‘This ain’t good’ and ‘You gotta get this out,'” he revealed. “They wanted me to go see a cornea specialist, Dr. Uyen Tran, in Nashville, and that’s when I started getting really nervous.”
The team of doctors told him that if he would have waited just seven to ten days more to get it looked at, he would have needed full chemotherapy. Right now they are watching him very closely and he is receiving chemo eye drops for the time being.
“I had so many friends asking, ‘Why didn’t you tell me?'” Colt Ford shared. “But I just thought everyone was dealing with so much stuff and stress … I didn’t want to put that burden on anyone else. But it did feel good to have so many people reach out to me. It reminded me that it’s not always about the music. They actually care about me — the person.”
Unsurprisingly, after having the eye surgery on a Tuesday, he ended up performing a concert on that Friday.
Colt Ford’s Updates to Fans
“I thought to myself … all the dumb s— I have done, I could have killed myself multiple times and this is what is going to take me out?” Ford added. “I know darn well that God never puts anything on you that you can’t handle, but the Lord might have a lot more confidence in me than I thought.”
This past year spent in quarantine due to the pandemic hurt Ford’s mental health. He shared that he had to take antidepressants for the majority of the time. He said that his time in lockdown was just “brutal.”
Ford has been keeping his fans updated on his medical journey via Instagram. He showed fans his eye patch and his recovery process post-surgery.
“I have been pulling off this pirate look,” he said in an Instagram video. “I have to wear it [a black eye patch] at night.”
After all of the fan love and support, Colt Ford couldn’t help but get emotional. He said that he has been humbled by all of the support.
