Some songs are so ahead of their time that they get overlooked upon release. Alan Jackson’s 2009 single “I Still Like Bologna” is one of those songs. In the track, Jackson sings about enjoying the simple things in life while living in a world full of new technology.

When the song dropped in the summer of 2009, it was relevant. The song has aged like wine over the past decade. As technology becomes more and more a part of everyday life, remembering to enjoy the simple things becomes more important. At the same time, we are further away from those simple moments than when Alan Jackson first released the song.

Kind of like Eric Church did on “Doing Life With Me” it is like Alan Jackson looked into the future while writing “I Still Like Bologna.” The track topped out at number 28. However, it could probably be a hit today.

Alan Jackson on Technology

“I Still Like Bologna” is all about appreciating the simple things in life. However, Alan Jackson doesn’t completely shun the tech of the time. In the first verse, Jackson lays out how he feels about all of the new-fangled gadgets populating his home. “The world’s a little faster every day/ Now I know it’s all well and good/ And I don’t embrace it like I should/ But I wouldn’t wanna go backwards even if I could.”

In the chorus, Alan Jackson lays out the little things that all of the high-speed internet and smartphones in the world can’t replace. “I still like bologna on white bread, now and then/ And the sound of a whippoorwill down a country road/ The grass between my toes and that sunset sinking low/ And a good woman’s love to hold me close.”

While good love will never go out of style, the world keeps moving further away from those simple moments that can only be found in the outdoors. This tune is a reminder to take a moment and get out there to enjoy the world around you. It makes you stop and think about all the things we take for granted.

Not only is “I Still Like Bologna” a fun and underrated song with a good message but it also has one of the cutest videos you’ll ever watch. Seriously, scroll up and watch that video. It’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. No matter where it comes from, that’s something that you just can’t beat.
