Country Throwback: Carrie Underwood Belts ‘Independence Day’ on 2005 ‘Today Show’ Episode

Carrie Underwood is great at singing her own songs, but we’re taking a look at the time she covers “Independence Day.”

Carrie Underwood had just sealed her fate as the winner of “American Idol.” The country superstar joined the “Today Show” to rock an incredible cover. Check out the stunning performance below:

The song was originally recorded by Martina McBride in 1994. The vocal styling might be hard for some to match. However, it’s no challenge for the “Jesus, Take the Wheel” singer. Underwood shows off the vocal talent that bested her competition on the talent show.

Carrie Underwood to Release First-Ever Gospel Album

Fast forward to the present day and the mega-successful “American Idol” alum is releasing a gospel album. Underwood says that it’s been on her bucket list so she’s excited to complete these projects. The first one was My Gift, a Christmas album. Now My Savior is the follow-up to the holiday record.

“Both of those projects were bucket list projects for me,” Underwood tells People. “With everything I do, I just want to be positive. And we had the Christmas album, which was so near and dear to my heart.”

Underwood’s gospel album My Savior is dropping on March 26. The Oklahoma-native tweets that she has always hoped to release an album of her favorite gospel music. Church hymns were the first songs she ever sang in public, she recalls. 

“The songs on this album are literally songs I’ve heard since birth,” she said in a trailer for the album. “ (They’re) familiar. These songs are like a warm hug.”

Carrie Underwood is a Christian and was raised in a Baptist church when she was younger. She’s been outspoken about her faith and even is hosting an inspirational series with her husband, Mike Fisher. Furthermore, Underwood wants to continue to bring joy into the world with this new album.

“Last year was a tough year for everybody, and I think just wanting to be positive in this world and sing these songs that bring me so much joy, hopefully, others can be like that as well and these songs can bring others joy. That goes back with everything that I do … I just want to do positive things,” Carrie Underwood says.
