Country music legend George Strait blew away the Country Music Association’s Award Show back in 1998 with his performance of “We Really Shouldn’t Be Doing This.”

Prior to his epic performance, the legendary singer went into the night with five nominations of his own. Those included Entertainer and Male Vocalist of the Year, the latter of which he took home. The 32nd annual CMA Ceremony was held on September 23, 1998 at the Grand Ole Opry House, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Strait, of course, was his usual, old-fashioned self. The King of Country was and is perhaps the most upright singer in the business, and he no doubt proved that with his 1998 performance at the CMAs.

Take a look at the performance below for yourself.

Strait’s hit song, “We Really Shouldn’t Be Doing This,” was written by Jim Lauderdale. It saw its release in September of 1998 as the third and final single from George Strait’s album One Step at a Time. It peaked at No. 4 in the United States, and No. 2 in Canada.

Lauderdale told Taste of Country that the idea for the song came to him when he was living in Nashville. He was living in an apartment that was above Buddy and Julie Miller’s house. They were working on an album of their own, so in order to get some sleep, Lauderdale went over to the Union Station hotel and found a good writing room.

There’s no doubt that George Strait has had an absolutely incredibly successful music career. During his career, he has won numerous awards and recognitions.

George Strait Posts Epic Throwback Cowboy Hat Pic

George Strait has been getting into the country spirit despite the surrounding circumstances and the coronavirus pandemic. On Tuesday, he posted a youthful throwback photo of himself on Instagram. In it, he is sporting a cowboy hat while staring off toward the horizon, alongside the lyrics to the song “Carried Away.”

He posted the picture with the caption, “Like a feather flying high up in the sky on a windy day, I get carried away. #CarriedAway.”

The song was the second single from Strait’s album Clear Blue Sky. It is about a straight-arrow narrator who gets caught up in a romance.

“Carried Away” was co-written by Steve Bogard and Jeff Stevens. And after Strait released it, it became his 30th No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. The hit song was also got a nomination for Single of the Year at the Country Music Association awards in 1997.
