Country music singer Keith Urban showed off his musical chops thanks to performing two of his hit songs at 2002’s Farm Aid concert.
Urban played “Song for Dad” and “Somebody Like You” on his set-list for the event, held in Burgettstown, Pa., on Sept. 21, 2002. The 2002 event marked the first time that a Farm Aid concert was held in the Northeast.
Both songs are a part of Urban’s 2002 album, “Golden Road.”
Keith Urban Honors His Father, Fatherhood In Song
“Song for Dad” is an ode to his own father and fatherhood in general. The song, though, had a deeper meaning after Urban lost his father-in-law in 2014 and his own father in 2015. Urban is married to actress Nicole Kidman.
Bob Urban, Keith’s father, died of prostate cancer. He gives his father a lot of credit for his career as Urban’s father introduced him to country music legend Don Williams.
One can read in Urban’s lyrics his own views toward his father and how much he meant to him.
“Lately, I’ve been noticing
I say the same things he used to say
And I even find myself
Acting the very same way
I tap my fingers on the table to the rhythm in my soul
And I jingle the car keys when I’m ready to go
And when I look in the mirror he’s right there in my eyes
Starin’ back at me and I realize
The older I get the more I can see
How much he loved my mother and my brother and me
And he did the best that he could
And I only hope when I have my own family
That every day I see a little more of my father in me”
Urban Puts ‘Somebody Like You’ Out As Album’s 1st Single
As for “Somebody Like You,” Keith Urban released it as the first single off of “Golden Road.” It spent six weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart, and reached No. 23 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
The song was co-written by Urban and John Shanks. It reflects a deep feeling and sense of love toward someone special in the lyrics.
“There’s a new wind blowin’ like I’ve never known
I’m breathin’ deeper than I’ve ever done
And it sure feels good
To finally feel the way I do
Now I wanna love somebody, love somebody like you
An’ I’m lettin’ go of all my lonely yesterdays
I’ve forgiven myself for the mistakes I’ve made
Now there’s just one thing
The only thing I wanna do, mmhmm
I wanna love somebody, love somebody like you”
