Morgan Wallen is one of the most famous performers to come from the singing reality show The Voice.
Wallen was only 20 years old when he appeared on Season 6 of The Voice in 2014. Both Shakira and Usher hit their buttons during the blind auditions while he performed his own version of “Collide” by Howie Day. Morgan chose Usher to be his coach.
Morgan Wallen Introduces Himself to America
When reaching The Voice’s stage in Los Angeles, he introduced himself to the crowd.
“My name is Morgan Wallen, I’m twenty years old, I’m from Knoxville, Tennessee, and I’m currently a landscaper,” he said.
Wallen was then stolen by coach Adam Levine. The southern twang in Morgan Wallen’s voice combined with the unique raspiness rang out in a different style than Stevie Jo, who’s light and airy vocals couldn’t quite match the depth of Morgan’s.
“Your voice is unique,” said Shakira during the blind auditions. “It has this raspy tone, gritty sound to it. It’s as manly as it gets.”
Battling Against Stevie Jo on “The Voice”
However, during the round two battle of the “Playoffs,” Morgan and Texas singer Stevie Jo went head-to-head on the stage while singing “Story of My Life” by One Direction. Stevie Jo won the round, resulting in Wallen’s return to Tennessee.
Wallen is thankful for his time spent on The Voice and all the lessons he learned during the experience. However, he says he’s happier to not have won the TV singing competition.
“They wanted me to sing pop music, and I wanted to sing country music,” he says. “But it was a big first step — I guess that’s the first time in my life where I realized that maybe I actually have a shot at this.”
Wallen’s Future Success
Although Wallen didn’t make it past the “Playoffs” rounds, he has thrived on the country music scene. Morgan has already garnished multiple No. 1 hits. According to Billboard, his single “Whiskey Glasses” was the top country-radio song of 2019.
Morgan has also created his own signature look, repping a flannel with the sleeves cut off and bringing the mullet back to life. He made his coveted appearance on Saturday Night Live in 2020, where individuals outside of the Nashville music scene were introduced to the young singer, songwriter, and musician.
He is continuing to gain headway, especially now that he’s found his place in country music with his songwriting skills and talented vocals.
