Country Throwback: Watch George Strait Belt ‘Milk Cow Blues’ at 2017 Vegas Show

Even though he retired from touring in 2014, country legend George Strait did not retire from performing. This edition of our country throwback series goes back to 2017 when Strait paid tribute to Elvis Presley with his rendition of “Milk Cow Blues.”

Over the past couple of years, Strait has played several weekends in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena. At one of those performances in Vegas, he thrilled fans with his hits from the past four decades.

One of those hits was “Milk Cow Blues,” which most people will remember as an Elvis Presley song. However, it was actually originally written and recorded by Kokomo Arnold in 1934. The song made him an instant star.

The well-known tune has been covered by various artists over the years including Jerry Lee Lewis, Glen Campbell, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Johnny Lee Wills, and, of course, Presley.

But the song didn’t make its way past one of country music’s leading stars in George Strait. During one of his 2017 concerts in Las Vegas, something special happened. “The King of Country” honored “The King of Rock and Roll” by performing his own version of “Milk Cow Blues.”

“Milk Cow Blues” was a track on his 1991 album Chill of an Early Fall. That album also features the number one songs “If I Know Me” and “You Know Me Better Than That,” and a cover of Hank Williams’ “Lovesick Blues.”

Strait, as he so always does, sings with charm. He looks directly at his fans in the audience while he smiles and sways. Although the Elvis version of the song had more of a rock vibe to it, Strait took the song back to its older roots with a hint of blues.

Another George Strait Country Throwback

It’s a two-for-one kind of day. The remastered music video for George Strait’s “I Cross My Heart” is something that all of his fans need to see. We featured it in another country throwback article.

The song is without a doubt one of the more popular songs Strait has released during his illustrious career.

It was written by Steve Dorff and Eric Kaz. It’s the first single from the George Strait album Pure Country, which is also the soundtrack to the movie of the same title. The song is featured as the movie’s finale. It reached number one in both the United States and Canada.

Pure Country is the thirteenth studio album by the country singer. The film stars Strait as the fictional country singer Dusty Wyatt Chandler and consists mostly of songs sung by Dusty in the film. The Pure Country soundtrack is Strait’s first soundtrack album. It saw a release in 1992.

The music video from 1992 and all the footage are scenes from the movie, Pure Country. And since it was released over 25 years ago, the quality isn’t very good by today’s standards. As such, Strait released the remastered music video for the song in April of 2019.
