Country Throwback: Young Loretta Lynn Rocks ‘You’re Lookin’ at Country’ on TV

Country legend Loretta Lynn wrote the hit song “You’re Lookin’ at Country,” and she also rocked a performance of the song on TV.

Lynn released “You’re Lookin’ at Country” in 1971, and the song quickly rose to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It reached No. 1 in Canada.

The country singer got the idea for the song from the landscapes she took in while traveling the country. Though she had to make it a love song so it would sell, it was really about the countryside she had seen.

More than 40 years after she released the song, Lynn got to perform “You’re Lookin’ at Country” at the 2014 Country Music Association Awards.

2021 Brings Important Milestones for Lynn

In the same year that Lynn celebrates the 50thanniversary of her iconic song “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” she will also release her 50thstudio album.

Still Woman Enough is scheduled to drop on March 19. Its 13 tracks will include duets with female country superstars such as Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood.

“I am just so thankful to have some of my friends join me on my new album. We girl singers gotta stick together,” Lynn said in a statement, according to Southern Living. “It’s amazing how much has happened in the fifty years since Coal Miner’s Daughter first came out and I’m extremely grateful to be given a part to play in the history of American music.”

Also, to mark the anniversary of “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” PBS released an authorized documentary about Lynn.

“Loretta Lynn: My Story in My Words” mixes new with archival interviews to chart Lynn’s ascent from Butcher’s Hollow, Kentucky to Nashville. By now, at age 88, Lynn has sold more than 45 million records. She was also the first woman to win the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award. And she has been inducted into more Halls of Fame than any other female musician.

“Thank you, PBS for putting this documentary together,” Lynn posted to Facebook. “I still can’t believe my life is one for any kind of fuss. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.”

But it wasn’t luck that catapulted Lynn to fame. It was talent. And that talent is on full display in her performance of “You’re Lookin’ at Country.”
