For southerners, there are a couple of sacred things. To name a few of them: biscuits, sweet tea, holiday decorations, country music, and football are things. Those things are a part of southerners’ DNA and something they basically can’t do without. Darius Rucker knows these things better than most, and while he plays music excellently, he can cook too.
Arguably the two most important things are country music and football, in no particular order. Concerning football though, Darius Rucker has some thoughts about it.
“For me, there are two times a year, man — football season and waiting for football season. Ever since I was five years old, I’ve loved football. I love how physical it is. I love the chess match of the game. I love the speed of the game. I love college football, but for me watching pro football is better because the speed is so much more.”
Darius Rucker clearly understands the importance of football to the entire country, not just in the south. He says that he loves every part of the game.
Darius Rucker Talks About His Favorite Meal To Cook
The extent of Darius Rucker’s southern roots certainly doesn’t end with football. He also loves southern style cooking, and one meal in particular.
He says that his obsession with southern food began at an early age and has never left him. His most favorite meal, though, is a southern classic. During an interview on Southern Living’s Biscuits & Jam podcast, he talks about okra soup.
“My favorite meal was always okra soup. It was just okra made with tomatoes and a bunch of vegetables and some ham hocks and all that Southern stuff. It’s still my favorite meal. My sisters make it for me every now and then. I love it.”
While okra itself is not inherently a southern thing, once its flavor was introduced in the southern U.S. it took off. Okra began as a creole dish, that has evolved itself into having many uses including being stewed, cooked into the hearty stew, battered, or deep-fried. Nonetheless, it has become beloved Southern food.
So, it makes complete sense that Darius Rucker loves to cook an okra soup.
Moreover, it seems appropriate that football on Sunday is complimented with a bowl of okra soup. Darius Rucker loves the vegetable so much that he might even start including it in his songs. So, look out for Darius Rucker to produce some songs with okra lyrics spread out throughout the song.
