Comedian Kate Quigley is in the hospital after a reported overdose that killed three others. She allegedly dated singer Darius Rucker earlier this summer. Darius Rucker is known for his work with Hootie and the Blowfish while Quigley is deep in the LA comedy scene.
Apparently, Quigley and others overdosed at a party in Los Angeles. Comedian Fuquan Johnson, as well as two others, passed away at the scene of an alleged overdose.
Kate Quigley is a comedian and model who has recently been linked to Darius Rucker. Currently, her condition remains unknown. It also appears that the party took place near Quigley’s home.
Partygoers reportedly called the police shortly after midnight. Examiners will conduct autopsies but it currently appears that those who overdosed ingested cocaine laced with fentanyl. While the LAPD’s homicide unit will be notified of the incident, it is unclear if they’ll have involvement in the case.
Kate Quigley has landed multiple gigs during her time in LA. She hosted Playboy TVs Undercover as well as the 2016 AVN awards. According to the Naples Daily News, She grew up in Ohio and studied theatre at the Chicago College of Performing Arts.
The deceased, Fuquan Johnson, was a Los Angeles comedian and a friend of Quigley’s. He was a writer for Comedy Parlour Live. He was only 42.
The other two people who overdosed at that Los Angeles party remain unknown. Depending on the course of action the LAPD takes, the incident could potentially result in serious charges for the dealers that supplied the laced drugs.
Fentanyl is a Common Cause of Overdoses
This is also by far from the first incident, in Los Angeles and elsewhere, that someone has overdosed on drugs laced with Fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid fairly similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. The drug played a role in the deaths of people such as Prince, Mac Miller, and Tom Petty.
Mac Miller’s death leads to federal charges after an investigation. Those types of investigations may continue to grow as Fentanyl overdoses continue to skyrocket.
According to the CDC, Opioids were responsible for 70.6% of all drug overdose deaths in 2019. On top of that, 72.9% of Opioid-related deaths were from synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. There’s been a major spike in fentanyl-related deaths since 2013, and the trend continues to worsen.
Between 2014 and 2015, the number of Fentanyl-related deaths almost doubled, going from 5,343 in 2014 to 13,882 in 2015. As is likely with this case, Fentanyl is often laced with other drugs. Unsuspecting victims are typically unaware of what they are taking. In 2019, fentanyl was involved in over two-thirds of New York City’s drug overdose cases.
Kate Quigley and Darius Rucker Reportedly Dated Earlier this Summer
It looks like Kate Quigley dated Darius Rucker earlier this summer. However, a representative for Darius Rucker told TMZ they have not been dating for a while. The former Hootie and the Blowfish singer got divorced last year.
Kate Quigley’s current condition is unknown.
