“Day Drinking” is one of the biggest hits from Little Big Town. Discover the story behind the creation of the chart-topping song.
The Songwriting Process
The song was written by Little Big Town members Karen Fairchild, Phillip Sweet, and Jimi Westbrook alongside Troy Verges and Barry Dean. Verges sat down with The Tennesseean to discuss the creation of the song and possible pitches for the group.
Verges and Dean met up prior to the songwriting session to come up with the production and guitar portion. They began brainstorming song titles when the concept of day drinking came about. Unlike most songs, every member contributed to the song.
“I’m glad that we gravitated to that idea and we just had a blast writing it,” Verges shared. “It was so much fun and it was so easy, as you know is often the case with big songs. It didn’t feel like a whole lot of work.”
How did the iconic whistle come about? By accident, of course. “They had been touring hard, and Karen’s voice was a little bit shot. So, as we were working on the song,” he revealed. “She didn’t want to sing the chorus every time, so she just whistled it when it came around. Everybody was like ‘That’s awesome. That’s part of the track.'”
