Dierks Bentley may be an extremely popular country artist, but as he looks back on his previous career he may be saying, “What Was I Thinkin.'”

While retail, food service, and office jobs are all common prior jobs, some celebrities have had some pretty odd jobs before making it big.

Dierks Bentley can sell out country concerts now and is even a mentor on the upcoming season of “The Voice” for Team Blake Shelton. Before all that, Bentley was cleaning toilets, and not just the ones at home.

According to The Boot, Dierks Bentley spent a summer working at Arizona’s Lake Powell. While working on the lake sounds pretty gorgeous and pleasant, Dierks Bentley certainly got the short end of water-side work. He had to clean up 250-gallon portable toilets that were in the rental houseboats that came back.

That means that the contents of these toilets had weeks to simmer in the Arizona heat. “It usually had a week’s worth of ‘stuff’ in there from the 10 to 12 houseboat guests,” Bentley said.

This was back when there were less modernized ways of cleaning up such a hazardous waste zone. Bentley also said that he had to use an old machine to empty the toilets. It had a tendency to backfire, which would cause the hose with all the “stuff” to shoot its contents straight into the air.

“I tried to outrun the rain. Got nailed,” Bentley said. The shower after that was likely life-changing.

Plenty of other country music stars had an interesting job prior to making it big too. Johnny Cash, for example, picked cotton starting at the age of 8. It involved dragging a six-foot-long sack through fields and ending up with some scattered wounds on his hands.

Dierks Bentley and Blake Shelton

It’s no surprise at this point that very few people were invited to Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s wedding. That includes most of the country music world Shelton is so intertwined with.

One of those non-invited individuals includes Dierks Bentley, Shelton’s new mentor on “The Voice.” He may not have gotten a wedding invite, but he planned out the perfect gift for the newlyweds. In fact, Bentley joked that “My presence at ‘The Voice’ was his present!” during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

The judges for the next season are Shelton, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Ariana Grande. The mentors are Kristin Chenoweth, Bentley, Camilla Cabello, and Jason Aldean.

Bentley spoke about just how exciting it’s all been so far. “It was amazing, you know? It was so great seeing him. We hadn’t seen each other in a long time. Just being around him as he talks to these kids, I was really impressed. He’s been doing it for a long time and he’s really good at, like, steering these kids who have these big dreams, these big hopes. This is so important to him,” Bentley also said.

Dierks Bentley is also on his Beers on Me Tour all across the country, where he finally gets to perform live once again.
