In 2019, country icon Dolly Parton joined Good Morning Britain where she opened up about her husband seeing her perform on only a few occasions.

The hosts asked Parton if it’s true that her husband, Carl Dean, has only seen her perform once in her lengthy career. Although the famous singer said he’s seen her perform at least a few times, she admitted that’s basically true.

“Well, he’s seen me maybe a time or two more than that,” Dolly Parton explained on GMB. “Usually if I’m playing at state fairs, he loves to go to the fair. [He goes] to the tractor pull and goes to the stockyards and all that. So sometimes he’ll ramble around and kinda hear me sing. But he’s not necessarily one of my biggest fans [music wise].”

The couple has been married for more than 50 years. In fact, Parton met Dean when she was only 18 years old before they got hitched in 1966. The pair have lived separate lives with her under the limelight and him preferring to live a private life.

However, he’s still proud of his wife and all her accomplishments. He just prefers other music, like the classic rock band Led Zeppelin.

“He’s proud of me. And he loves that I love what I do. I think it’s just, I don’t know, it’s a touchy subject. I’m like his little girl I think. And he just worries about that. He likes hard rock, he likes Led Zeppelin and blue grass music. My music is somewhere in between. I mean he doesn’t dislike it, but he doesn’t go out of his way to play my records. Let’s put it that way,” she added.

Dolly Parton Talks More About Her Marriage To Carl Dean

Dolly Parton has always had a mutual agreement with her husband to keep him out of the spotlight. As Parton has explained before, their separate lifestyles seem to work for them and their relationship. The GMB hosts suggested that Parton and Dean’s separate lifestyles contribute to their long and happy marriage. Dolly didn’t disagree.

“You know, I think that’s true,” Dolly Parton agreed. “And the fact that we like each other, we respect each other, we’ve always had a good time. He’s crazy and I’m crazy. We laugh a lot and I think that’s been one of the healthiest, the most precious parts of our relationship. And we will be married 53 years this coming May [of 2019].”

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Parton, 74, shared details about her longtime marriage to Dean. The singer opened up about her husband’s private lifestyle in comparison to her public persona. She even joked that fans think her husband is imaginary since it’s a rarity Dean is seen out with his famous wife.

“A lot of people have thought that through the years because he does not want to be in the spotlight at all. It’s just not who he is,” she explained. “He’s, like, a quiet, reserved person. He figured if he ever got out there in that, he’d never get a minute’s peace. And he’s right about that.”

Dolly Parton says her husband didn’t choose the celebrity lifestyle. Yet he did choose her. So they’ve managed to make both work for each of them.

“I’ve always respected and appreciated that in him, and I’ve always tried to keep him out of the limelight as much as I can,” Parton continued. “He said: ‘I didn’t choose this world, I chose you, and you chose that world. But we can keep our lives separate and together.’ And we do and we have.”
