In one of the more surprising recent musical collaborations, Dolly Parton teamed with talk show host Jimmy Fallon. The two performed a humorous duet of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
Fallon is known more for his comedic antics than his musical gifts. But he’s been known to perform with music guests on his show at times. In the intro to the song, Parton confessed she always wanted to perform a duet with Fallon. “I don’t know how to say this without sounding all mushy and romantic.”
Fallon replied, “I kinda like mushy and romantic. Especially this time of year.”
Carey released the song back in 1994 as part of her holiday album Merry Christmas.
Dolly Parton released her new Christmas album on Oct. 2.
While Halloween nor Thanksgiving are here yet, Parton and Fallon are already in the Christmas spirit. The duet comes as part of Parton’s new album A Holly Dolly Christmas. The album released on Oct. 2, with plenty of time to get fans in a similarly festive mood.
Parton has recorded three Christmas albums including Holly Dolly during her career. In addition to a collaboration with Fallon, Parton is joined by several other singers on the album. Michael Bublé, Willie Nelson, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Parton’s goddaughter Miley Cyrus are among them.
“I thought, ‘I think I’ll call it A Holly Dolly Christmas because I love the song ‘A Holly Jolly Christmas’ with Burl Ives,” she told Billboard. “He used to be on all of my Christmas specials all through the years. I think of him as Mr. Christmas. I thought, ‘Why don’t do I call it something cute and clever, like that or Deck the Halls with Boughs of Dolly, something corny like that.’”
Additionally, Parton will also release a new Christmas special on Netflix on Nov. 22. The film is titled Dolly Parton’s Christmas on The Square and will feature 14 original songs by Parton.
