You win some, you lose some – even when you’re legendary country superstar Dolly Parton. What makes things even more interesting is when you’re Dolly Parton and you don’t win a Dolly look-alike contest.
While that might seem too absurd to be true, it actually happened. According to an article in Woman’s World, Parton talks about the humorous incident in her memoir, “Dream More.”
During a trip to Los Angeles, the singer decided to take part in a celebrity impersonator contest with a group of drag queens. Dolly entered the contest, but didn’t tell anyone she was actually the person they were all there to impersonate.
Audience Doesn’t Know Dolly Parton Entered Look Alike Contest
“They had a bunch of Chers and Dollys that year, so I just over-exaggerated — made my beauty mark bigger, the eyes bigger, the hair bigger, everything,” she told ABC. “All these beautiful drag queens had worked for weeks and months getting their clothes. So I just got in the line and I just walked across… but I got the least applause.”
How crazy is that?! Maybe if they had let Dolly sing just a few bars of one of her hit songs the other contestants, audience members, and judges would have realized they were in the presence of greatness. But, maybe not. We’ll never know. However, one can’t help but want to see the winner of that contest on that evening in Los Angeles. Who can out Dolly, the real Dolly?
Dolly Parton also talked about entering the contest with Harry Connick, Jr., on his television show in 2017.
“Me and a bunch of friends decided we would go down (to the bar); it would be funny ’cause we were all dressed up – and me, being Dolly,” she told Harry. “So, they had these big drag queens – they looked great, too. They were prettier than I could ever dream of being.”
Parton goes on to say that the contest winner was judged on how much applause a contest received while walking across the stage.
“So, all these beautiful guys were walking across – these Dollys, Dolly Partons like this tall,” she says as she motions with her hand way above her head. “And, here I come walking across the stage and I got the least applause.”

Dolly Mourns Brother
While she is known for her laugh and sense of humor, Dolly Parton is facing heartbreak and loss this week. Her brother, Randy Parton, died on Thursday (Jan. 21). Randy was 67 and died after a long battle with cancer.
Following his death, Dolly shared a moving tribute to her brother on social media.
“My brother Randy has lost his battle with cancer. The family and I are grieving his loss. But we know he is in a better place than we are at this time,” she posted on Facebook. “We are a family of faith. And we believe that he is safe with God and that he is joined by members of the family that have gone on before and have welcomed him with joy and open arms.”
