Country music star Dolly Parton is more than just a talented singer — she’s also known for her love of comfort foods.
The 75-year-old country legend explained as much when The Boot asked her if she had any guilty pleasures. She sat down with the outlet back in 2008.
“I love all kinds of food,” Parton explained. “But I’m a little, short person, so I have to watch what I eat.”
Now that’s a phrase we never thought we would hear. Dolly Parton having to watch her weight? Who would have guessed? She said that people around her always told her that she was too skinny.
“They made a big deal about me being so skinny, but I have to watch it,” she said. “With my height and small bone structure and my age, I try to keep it in check.”
It seems like it’s always the littlest people that can eat the most. And according to the queen of country music herself, she was one of those people.
“Because I have a tendency to be a pig! And I was heavy at one time… I love eating. I hate diet foods and diet drinks. So I just try to stick to small portions of the things I do like. Whether it’s ice cream, cake, and my weakness is any kind of potato.”
Five Favorite Meals of Dolly Parton
Number one on Dolly Parton’s favorite foods list is a classic Southern dessert — banana pudding. The country superstar calls this dessert one of her favorite foods of all time. She even uses the recipe at her Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Number two on the list shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s chicken and dumplins’. Parton has long been a lover of the fan-favorite meal and even has a chicken and dumplins’ recipe in her cookbook, Dolly’s Dixie Fixin’s: Love, Laughter and Lots of Good Food.
Coming in at third on the list is roast pork. Parton once told the New York Times that her go-to meal for entertaining guests is roast pork, fried okra, green beans, and turnip greens.
“I love roast pork, especially the fatty part,” she said. “I can’t help it. The greasier the food, the better.”
At the number four spot, stone soup may be a little harder to recognize. Parton shared the recipe for the southern staple with Hallmark a few years ago.
And finally, at number five is yet another favorite dessert of Dolly Parton. Walnut pie lands just behind banana pudding. If you follow the country music star on social media, you may remember that she shared her favorite walnut pie recipe last Pi Day. For those who aren’t sure, walnut pie is similar to pecan pie, but with the obvious exception of walnuts.
