There are a handful of country music artists that transcend genre and generational lines. Dolly Parton is at the very top of that list. Personally, I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t love Dolly for her shining personality and loving heart. Additionally, many of her songs have become cultural touchstones in the United States. “Jolene” is probably the most popular among them. There’s something about the melody, the lyrics, and the passion with which she sings them that gives the song mass appeal.

Right now, if you search “Jolene cover” you’ll get thousands of results. Artists in just about every genre have taken Dolly Parton’s iconic hit and given it their own spin. Earlier this year, controversial hip-hop artist Lil Nas X did his own cover and Dolly loved it. Truth be told, Parton loves seeing people cover her songs. After all, part of the reason she records music is to touch her listeners. Seeing someone put in the effort to record a cover of one of her songs lets her know she succeeded. Recently, Dolly took to Twitter to reveal her favorite “Jolene” cover. Some fans might find her choice surprising.

In the tweet, Dolly Parton said, “My little song ‘Jolene’ has been done so many different ways and I love them all, but I think this one is my favorite.”

The tweet also includes a very short clip of DESTRUCTO’s version of the song. The new EDM remix of the classic country tune is ready for the dance floor. However, DESTRUCTO preserved much of the song’s original parts. Dolly Parton’s vocals and guitar are still front-and-center. Check out the full version below.

DESTRUCTO on Remixing the Dolly Parton Classic

Gary Richards, who goes by the name DESTRUCTO is a mainstay in the EDM world and founder of the HARD festival, according to CMT. He’s also a huge Dolly Parton fan. About the iconic song, he said, “’Jolene’ has always been part of my musical DNA since day one. It is a true classic not only for country music but for American music.” Then, he discussed why he wanted to do the remix. “I’ve always felt its lyrics and melody could be the bones to build a real dance floor banger around. Something to sing along to while getting your dance on.”

Richards went on to say that he was “beyond thrilled” to be given the chance to “remix one of the greatest songs of all time.” However, the fact that Dolly Parton loves the remix makes it that much better for him. Then, he spoke briefly about Dolly. “She is a national treasure and to be able to have the world hear my version of [‘Jolene’] with her behind it is amazing.”
