Dolly Parton Reveals One Job She Prefers Over All Her Many Ventures

Dolly Parton loves to write music. Over the years, Parton has done many different things. But her passion always returns to where she first started. The country legend said songwriting is her favorite job within the industry, and she would do it forever if she could.

“I would choose to be a songwriter,” Parton told The New York Times. “I could happily just sit in my house forever, enjoy life, and write songs.”

Parton may have the time to do just that. Recently, she revealed she was taking 2021 off after having a very busy schedule this year. Parton made the decision in part to avoid oversaturating the market with her signature brand.

Dolly Parton Reveals the Inspiration Behind Her Hits

Parton also discusses her passion for songwriting in her book “Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics.” The book chronicles Parton’s decades-long career. The book explores the inspiration and stories behind 175 of her hit songs, along with pictures and memorabilia.

Previously, Parton shared her process for songwriting. Sometimes songwriting occurs in the spur of the moment. Over the years, Parton wrote song lyrics on everything from a Kleenex box to a McDonald’s receipt to the back of her hand. But when she gets the chance, she’ll go to her lake house to work on songs.

“I used to always say, ‘Okay, I’m taking two weeks off just to write,’” Parton told Bustle. “Then I would go up to my lake house or somewhere else [and write]. The first few days I would go on a juice fast until I cleaned myself out. Then I would do a day or so of a water fast, just to feel closer to God.”

“To me, that’s my personal God time,” Parton continued. “Nothing in this world is greater than when I have those times where I feel like I’m living on creative and spiritual energy. I just write, go to sleep, wake up, and write some more. Sometimes, I can go for hours, and hours, and hours. I’ve written for 24 hours straight. That’s my favorite thing ever. That’s my time.”
