At 75 years old, Dolly Parton had accomplished more than most people could in several lifetimes. Her songwriting is nearly unparalleled in both volume and quality. However, that’s not all she’s done. Dolly has starred in several movies such as 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and more recently, Christmas on the Square. Additionally, Parton co-penned a novel with James Patterson, released her own fragrance line, owns a theme park, and donated millions to charity. That list, while impressive, is not exhaustive. We could be here all day listing her accomplishments.

Now, we make a lot of hay about how sweet, kind, and loving Dolly Parton is. However, it’s clear that she’s also incredibly disciplined. All the kindness in the world won’t get you anywhere if you don’t buckle down and get things done. She expects the same discipline from people who work for her. In a recent interview with People, Dolly opened up about how she is as a boss.

Dolly Parton: Tough but Fair

“I’m a good boss. I think,” Dolly Parton told the publication. She went on to say that she tries to rule with “love and compassion,” but also likes to run a tight ship. “I’m a fair and honest person. I like to be as friendly as I can and love the people that work with me and I like to have them love me,” but she’s not a pushover.

At the same time, Dolly Parton knows that people don’t take jobs out of the kindness of their hearts. She doesn’t ignore the fact that the employee-employer relationship is a transactional one. “I know that we’re using each other and that when it’s time for them to go on, they can. But, I want to be the kind of person, if they need to come talk to me, they can.” She continued, saying that she likes her employees to talk to her “almost like as a friend” first, then get down to business. Overall, Dolly doesn’t want anyone to be intimidated by her or afraid to talk to her.

However, Dolly Parton also knows that not everyone has the same drive and ambition that she does. She knows how to deal with those folks as well. “Some people, I have to kick their ass up one side and down the other, because some people will just not listen,” she said with a laugh.

We all knew that Dolly Parton has one of the biggest hearts in the entertainment world. Now, we have an idea of what it’s like to work for her. Honestly, she sounds like the best kind of boss an employee could ask for. Sometimes, you need a boss that is kind and caring. Other times, we all need a metaphorical good swift kick in the ass.
