Dolly Parton ‘Thrilled’ After Winning First Emmy Award for ‘Christmas on the Square’

Dolly Parton has received many honors and awards during her legendary career. Now, the 75-year-old country music icon can call herself an Emmy Award winner.

Parton added this award to her collection thanks to the Netflix holiday film, “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square.” The celebration of the beloved holiday and the things that make life truly worth living.

The film won two Emmy Awards. One was for Outstanding Television Movie. The other was for Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming. This award was the work of recent Kennedy Center Honors recipient, Debbie Allen.

Needless to say, Dolly Parton was very happy that her holiday film and her friend received the awards. She shared her excitement via social media on Monday, Sept. 13. “Well how happy can I be to have won a @TelevisionAcad Emmy for the @netflixfamily film #ChristmasontheSquare!” the “Jolene” singer tweeted.

Next, she congratulated Allen on her Emmy win. “And I’m so thrilled for my dear friend @msdebbieallen on winning for choreography,” Parton also tweeted.

Ever kind and generous, Dolly Parton closed her tweet with words of gratitude: “Thanks everybody for everything.”

Dolly Parton wasn’t the only person involved in the holiday television movie who shared excitement about the Emmy wins. Debbie Allen also took to social media to share her joy. “Congratulations to the entire Cast and Crew of #ChristmasOnTheSquare! WE WON!!!!!!” Allen tweeted along with a photo of the film’s team.

“Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” beat out four other television movies to win the Outstanding Television Movie Emmy Award. They were “Uncle Frank” (Amazon Prime Video), “Sylvie’s Love” (Amazon Prime Video), “Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia (Lifetime), and also “Oslo” (HBO).

Dolly Parton Was an Executive Producer, Actor, and Songwriter for Emmy-Winning Holiday Movie

Of course, Dolly Parton played a major role in the success of this holiday film. In addition to starring in the project, she was also an executive producer. And being a legendary songwriter, Parton created 14 songs for the movie.

The film is an updated version of the classic story, “A Christmas Carol.” The “Scrooge” figure in Parton’s version was played by actress Christine Baranski. Baranski’s character is angry and unhappy. Her attitude begins to impact others when she attempts to sell her hometown. Parton, unsurprisingly, played an angel.

“Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” came out of a 2018 deal the famous singer signed with Netflix. When she signed the deal, she expressed her joy that her songs and stories would bring joy to viewers through the popular streaming service.

“As a songwriter, I have always enjoyed telling stories through my music. I am thrilled to be bringing some of my favorite songs to life with Netflix. We hope our show will inspire and entertain families and folks of all generations, and I want to thank the good folks at Netflix and Warner Bros. TV for their incredible support,” Parton also said in 2018.
