Eric Church’s Album ‘Chief’ Turns 10: Celebrating the Triple Platinum Album

Eric Church made his way into the country scene in 2006 with Sinners Like Me. The album produced four singles. Three of those hit the top twenty. Church came back again in 2009 with Carolina which produced his top-10 single. Then, in 2011, Mr. Misunderstood really hit his stride. Ten years ago today, he dropped Chief. It was his first album to debut at number-one on the Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts. Additionally, it produced his first two chart-topping singles.

Eric Church has always written and recorded songs that his audience can relate to. However, he really caught lightning in a bottle with his third record. It seemed as though the songs on it resonated deeply with listeners everywhere. After all, numbers don’t lie. It took less than a year for Chief to reach Platinum status. But, it didn’t just go Platinum once. The RIAA certified the record triple platinum in June of 2012. By that time, it had shipped more than 3 million units.

So, Chief was Eric Church’s third album but it carried three important firsts for the “Drink In My Hand Singer.” It brought him his first number-one album, his first chart-topping singles, as well as his first Platinum album. Today, Chruch has 10 number-one singles and five platinum plaques.

Chief also won Album of the Year at both the ACM Awards and the CMA Awards.

More About ‘Chief’

Eric Church fans know that this album is self-titled, in a way. He picked up the nickname from his backing band. It came from his signature pairing of aviator sunglasses and ballcap. However, the nickname Chief goes back a couple of generations in his family.

Eric Church’s grandfather was the chief of police in Granite Falls, North Carolina. Everyone he knew called him Chief. So, when Church’s band laid that moniker on him, he wore it with pride. Today, Chief is Church’s alter-ego. He’s a pretty laid-back guy most of the time. However, when the hat and shades go on, he transforms into the world-class entertainer that we all know and love.

So, it was with this shared nickname and persona in mind that Eric Church titled his third album. It turned out to be an excellent way to cement that nickname in the hearts and minds of people around the world while honoring his grandfather.
