Eric Church Opens Up About Process for Making ‘Heart & Soul’ Triple Album

by Keeli Parkey

It’s time for the Church Choir to stand up and rejoice! Eric Church plans to release three new albums. Entitled “Heart & Soul,” the epic work will be released in phases during the month of April.

Church talked about the process of making the triple “Heart & Soul” album during a recent interview with Apple Music’s Kelleigh Bannen.

“We went to the mountains of North Carolina, as everybody knows,” Church said in the videoed interview, “and we recorded a lot of music. And, that music will manifest itself in three albums.”

These albums are highlights of his career, according to the singer.

“It’s my favorite project we’ve ever done,” Church said. “The way it was recorded, it was a lot of fun. It was spiritual to me. And, this was pre-COVID. So, you get kind of a pre-COVID look. Basically, we secluded ourselves. We went into quarantine before anybody else had to go into quarantine.”

The work Eric Church and company completed during their “quarantine” has the singer very happy to release it to the world.

“… I’m excited about getting it out into the world,” he said. “It’s the biggest project that we’ve ever done.”

The work by Church and company while in North Carolina was a collaborative process.

“For me, what I wanted to do was I wanted to write a song the same day we recorded that song,” Church said in discussing the process he used during those North Carolina sessions. “And, let creativity lead. And, if it sucked, it sucked. But, just let it be what it was going to be.”

That creative process was thrilling for Church.

“There’s nothing like the birth of a song,” he said. “… you get the goosebumps … I wanted to carry that directly into the studio.”

Church also said he spent his nights in North Carolina writing songs. Then, he would head to the studio in the early afternoon to record.

“It’s just the most freeing – I don’t know … I’ve never had anything creatively that was just that soul-lifting,” Church said.

‘Heart & Soul’ Triple Album Coming in April

Church previously said that the “Heart” album will be released on April 16. It will included nine songs. On that list are the tracks “Stick That In Your Country Song,” “Crazy Land,” and “Heart On Fire.”

The “Soul” album is set to be released on April 23. Songs on this album include “Lynyrd Skynyrd Jones” and “Hell of a View.”

The third album being released by Eric Church in April is the “&” album. This collection of songs will be released, unsurprisingly, between the “Heart” album and the “Soul” album. According to reports, the “&” album is due to be released on April 20. It includes the songs “Doin’ Life With Me” and “Through My Ray Bans.”

You can watch Eric Church talk about “Heart & Soul,” as well as a very special Christmas gift he received from Keith Urban below.

Keith Urban Gives Eric Church Martin Guitar for Christmas

At the start of the videoed interview, Bannen notices a guitar on the wall behind Church and asks him about it.

“Who we got? Who we got back there, guitar wise?” Bannen asks.

“You know what’s interesting,” Church says in response. “Keith Urban sent me a 1933 Martin for Christmas.”

Bannen in flabbergasted at that news. And, who can blame here. “This Christmas?” she asks.

“This Christmas,” Eric Church responds. “I came back and it was underneath the tree and I was blown away. He was thanking for the ‘We Were’ song that we had. Unbelievable. A pre-war Martin; it was unbelievable. What a sweet guy.”
