Johnny Bush’s Life and Legacy

Bush died at the age of 85 on Friday, Oct. 16, his manager confirmed to Rolling Stone. At this time, his cause of death has not been officially announced. However, the Houston Chronicle reports that Bush died of pneumonia.

During his time, Bush was a popular name as a honky-tonk performer in his hometown of Houston. Even at the age of 85, Bush continued performing. Before his passing, his website stated that Bush planned to take the stage in March of 2021.

Bush caught his big break in the music industry thanks to country legend Willie Nelson. The “On the Road Again” singer helped Bush land a gig as the drummer for the Ray Price band.

He went on to release his debut single, “Sound of a Heartache,” in 1967. Five years thereafter, in 1972, Bush penned “Whiskey River,” which went on to be a global hit on Nelson’s release one year later on “Shotgun Willie.”

Back in 1968, Nelson spoke about his tight-knit relationship with Bush, according to Fox News. β€œIt seemed that one day I had never heard of Johnny Bush and then on the next day I had always known him,” Nelson. β€œWe’re that good of friends.”
